Cleared for turnout! Day 2, so far so good..

After about six months of more or less solid stall rest, Riley is cleared for turnout. For drugs, we are using 1.5 cc Zylazine (Rompun) IM. I have to say it is much more effective at toning down the antics than Acepromazine. The one "down side" is that it is an analgesic -- while he looks pretty sound, I have to keep in mind that Rompun masks pain. At any rate, here he is. Thursday, with highs predicted in the 40s, we'll turn him out in the small paddock (about 1/3 acre) with his buddy Finn (shown here very patiently putting up with Riley's nudginess). This movie comes in two versions -- one with commentary and music, one for the purists...

Annotated (with music, if Youtube stops "breaking" the audio)

Pure documentary :-)

  2. He looks good to me. Turnout outside should really be fun. Be sure to have the camera on hand!

I love watching horses play. It shows how happy and healthy they are.

  3. Great to see! You've been through a lot and I agree with the kind comments on your previous post. You've been very patient and gracious through what I'm sure has been an exhausting struggle. I look forward to more videos of Riley looking so happy and healthy!

  5. That was so cute!! He looks awesome. "he's like the little brother from hell!" LOL.

Has it really been 6 months? You must be soooooo happy to see him out & about. Isn't it grand? My longest was 2 months and I think we would have killed each other soon if it had lasted another week....

  7. He looks so happy to be back out again. He's been such a trooper through the whole process, and it's nice to see him get some of his freedom back - and even with a buddy! Fingers crossed for continued success for you and Riley!

  9. He looks so happy to be running around. Your other horse sure has a lot more patience than I did with my little brother when he was fresh like that :)

  10. He looks great! You must be so thrilled to have him sound, happy and playing again!

It's amazing to me how similar his movement is to my De Laurentis filly.

  11. Yeah! Go Riley! I've become more than a little attached to Riley through this ordeal. :) It makes me so happy to see him out and about and moving so beautifully. I can't imagine how you must feel.

The part where they have to stop and look out the windows? Classic. So...HORSE. Thanks for sharing.

  12. Laurea, I too find that de laurentis throws a particular type. Do you have recent pix?

  13. No recent pics- I'm a bad mommy!

This is the most recent one I have, from August- http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=558979&l=5f964b6d61&id=1493252007

I think De Laurentis really stamps his get too, even those out of extremely different mare types. Even his half-Arab get share the look- have you seen De La Hombre?
