Ya had to get me started on the sixties...

When I posted my Hair post, one commenter wryly observed that the movie version was produced in 1979, the peak of the "me decade." Yes, I appreciate the irony too. However,  at least a few of us in any generation are stuck in the previous generation. I was a  child of the seventies in many ways, but my role models were from the folk era and early sixties -- in junior high and high school, I was listening to Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, Joni Mitchell, and the Everly Brothers.

Born 10 years too late...
My idol and role model at the time was Mary Travers of Peter Paul and Mary.  She was the real deal. Even if you think you remember her, watch this video and bring her coolness back into sharp focus. The whole video, now!  It's just TWO MINUTES. Geez.

I knew better than to try for Mary's kick-ass bangs, but here is my attempt at Mary Travers hair. Maybe with a little Peggy Lipton ( The Mod Squad?)  thrown in.Oh, and John Denver glasses.

Sigh. It makes me sad to think that there are no Joni Mitchells, no Mary Travers'es for today's young women. Are they out there? Am I missing them?

  1. I loved Peter, Paul and Mary. I was lucky enough to hear them live in concert. What a great night that was!! I still have an album from that tour.

I never did try to emulate any of them, except perhaps in singing some of the songs, and wishing I had the other two voices to harmonize.

You are brave to look back at your old photos.....*G* (Well, they are not quite as old as my old photos, but still....)

  3. I grew up listening to those bands as well. I had a cassette of Peter Paul and Mary I would fall asleep to as a baby.

As I got older I had my own women of the folk rock persuasion to look up to, many that Wikipedia lists as being influenced by Mitchell

Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Natalie Merchant, Ani Difranco etc etc... may not be your cup of tea but I think they may be my generations versions.

  4. Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, I liked them later on :-)

  5. Wow, these references take things back. How cool was Peggy Lipton? Your look was perfect!
I like Golden the Pony Girl's suggestions for her generation. They're definitely very cool too, and many are timeless.

  6. Ani DiFranco was definitely that for me.

    Nowadays, Sara Bareilles:

Ingrid Michaelson (I had to post at least one video I had taken!):

Imogen Heap (she's very different, but amazing and unique):

  8. I love those harmonies and you were right about Mary's bangs...totally kick-ass.

I was born in '79, so Tori Amos is the stand out for me. I like Fiona Apple too, but nobody can rock a piano quite like Tori. She is one of the few artists I have seen live. It was totally mesmerizing and wonderful.

  9. I, too, was raised on PP&M. I had a dog that loved them too. When we would put the record on, she'd crawl onto her bed and listen!
Well, the times they are a-changin'. Role model for today's girls: Lady Gaga?!!!!

  10. Lady GaGa. Talking to the teens I work with (I'm a YA Librarian) I think Lady GaGA is it. She is commercial, but she isn't exploited. Mary in PPM was one of the first women vocalist who stood on equal footing with her male band mates. Ground breaking at the time.

  11. I am a child of the '60's, and I remember the bangs. You were supposed to tape them down, but I ended up with a crease from the tape.
What I loved about those singers is that it wasn't about the hype and the dance, it was about the music. I can listen to Joni Mitchell over and over and over again. When in college, I started my day with Clouds or Ladies of the Canyon. By the way, your hair is a lovely color.

  12. I was a teen in the 60's and liked P,P & Mary too. But I think I'd have to say I was a bigger fan of the Rolling Stones,Eric Clapton and the Eagles. As for women in groups with men on equal footing, I liked Stevie Nicks with Fleetwood Mac and Janis Joplin.(these may have been more toward the 70's groups,I'm not sure)?

I met Mary Travers a few years back at a barn we were boarding at. She was a really nice person and she still had her bangs. Actually, she wanted my daughter to take care of her animals while she went on a small tour. I can't remember if she did or not though.
