Riley trashes another blanket

I know a lot about horse blanket construction because of Riley, because his blankets keep getting dissected with extreme prejudice. I am thanking my lucky stars that the turnout of many colors is intact--so many casualties otherwise.

Obviously he can't do the job alone, but no matter where I board him there are accomplices. When Riley was first turned out with Ernie, peopled warned me that Ernie was "a bit of a nudge." Check out this video, and you can see Ernie has met his match in that department. Riley's blankets may fare the worst, but there's no doubt about "who started it."

I am thankful that he hasn't trashed other horses' blankets to my knowledge. He's expensive enough.

  1. Question: What are your recommendations on blankets? I'm trying to figure out if I want to get a blanket for Lucy. She has a thin winter coat and I find her shivering often. Does that mean she needs a blanket in the winter?

  2. Too cute! My guys haven't needed to be blanketed the past few winters, but if they had, I would suspect I'd be seeing a lot of these hokey pokey too :)

  3. What silly boys! I bought the V-Tech Marathon turnout blanket from SS Tack and so far it doesn't have a scratch on it. My 15 yr old Thoroughbred is too dominant to let another horse come close enough to chew on his blanket.

  4. I have spent more money buying cheap to mediocre blankets and replacing them every season for my Friesian mare than I did just buying her some Rambos. Rambos are expensive upfront (better if you can get them on sale in the off seasons) but you save more money in the long run because they last foreverrrrr.

  5. Hahaha, just the next step up from halter tag;) I have to admit, videos like this always make me smile; so long as its not my horse in the video.... that's when I cringe!

  7. Tucker's working on his third blanket this year. Not sure who starts the games here, but I am quite sure Tucker in not all that innocent.

Have to laugh at Riley, even if we know the disaster yet to strike.

Funny. My own post today is about blankets and such and I was thinking of Riley's striking striped number when I wrote some of it. He looks so dashing!! Glad that one is still on one piece. *lol*

  8. Oh man I know how this goes. My horse has gone through about 2 blankets a year! His turnouts fare better than the thinner stable sheets which he pummels in no time but his turnouts have massive tears and straps missing at the end of the winter and I always have to get them repaired. As for blanket rec's for G, I recommend weatherbeeta's or Rambo Wugs. Ones with high necks don't rub as much on the shoulders as regular cut ones.
The video made me giggle a little :)

  9. You have to take a look at Schneider's blankets....especially the "Body Armor" line (www.sstack.com). These blankets have a 2 year warranty on them! They are typically more popular with the Western crowd, but I found them several years ago and will not buy anything else!

  10. My horses blanket is in my truck at this very moment so I can bring it in to be patched up. the horse he shares a paddock with is famous for distroying blankets. awesome...I'm so glad he is with that horse...since blankets are so cheap and I can just buy a new one every day...grrrrr

  11. I use a breathable raincoat on my thin haired mare, generally this is all she needs. rarely do I have to get out a real blanket...

  13. Adorable video. Reminds me of a toddler pulling on their Mama's shirt for attention.

We don't tend to blanket around here even when we get down to single digits, as long as it's dry. Horses get thick coats and we just feed extra hay to keep their inner furnaces burning. :)
But when it's wet and cold, I do have a waterproof sheet for my mare. I haven't used it yet because we've had a very dry winter.

  14. They seem to go through blankets so fast! Silly things! I buy more expensive ones now because when I went for the cheaper ones, I spent more money replacing them.
