Robert Dover in NJ: The clinic I missed

I had inquired about submitting an application for my trainer and Riley to ride in the Robert Dover clinic. I spoke with the organizer who made it clear that the process was very competitive, and that only the top horse/rider combinations would be selected. I opted not to apply, since I figured Riley might not be in that class of competition (here in the Northeast there are some really top competitors). I wasn't really interested in auditing. So I guess the clinic is going to take place. I know because I got this email.

  1. Good grief....sounds as if there were spots open and you could have gone, if you had only known...What kind of nonsense is that?

Mixed reviews have been heard about Robert as a teacher here, so hard to say if this is a good or bad result.

Either way, there seems to be some kind of communication breakdown here. But it doesn't surprise me with horsepeople. Sometimes clarity of purpose and clarity of expression fall by the wayside. Sorry about that.

  2. I like it when a clinician works with a range of horse/rider levels and abilities. Sounds like they closed the doors on their own clinic.

  3. Is it me, or is there just a hint of a smug tone there? It being me is a very distinct possibility because of some people I have had the misfortune of encountering who have smug and snotty attitudes and would put their attitudes down on paper in similar ways...

  7. You know, I have a theory about horse people. It's kind of long. I think I might turn it into a blog post.

  8. What a tactless letter!
I wouldn't waste my money supporting people who are so rude to potential clients (the hosts, not necessarily RD).
Though, if I were RD, I would be pretty embarrassed to have my name associated with such drivel.

  11. Wow; call me overly sensitive, but that struck me as being PO&T (pretty obnoxious and tacky). Awful lot of ego packed into that email.
Maybe it was a lucky escape for you ;o)

  12. Well, you just go with the flow. I have a feeling that a BNT would be interested in Riley. Who wants to watch a bunch of BTDT horses and riders going around? A nice talented young horse would be much more interesting. So next time a BNT is coming in your area, consider it and go for it!

  13. Unlike that email, I will say what I mean: that was really snobby haha! Save your time and money for a clinic that's not so "exclusive".

  14. Hmmm, based on the reports from people I know who have taken his clinics in the past, you might have made a good choice. I think there are trainers from whom you would get more from in a clinic situation.
