Slice of life: Bringing the boys in

It's November 20, sixty degrees, and part-sunny -- almost December and I'm walking around in a thin turtleneck. I've just finished mucking stalls, and Bob has come with me to bring in the horses so I can ride Ri. I hand Bob the video camera to get footage of my colorful boys. Nothing happens here, but an uneventful day with horses is a sort of heaven, isn't it? I love these little familiar routines, and I have  so much to be thankful for. Hug your horses.

Some new tidbits of info: Harv is now barefoot and doing well in that respect; later in the evening on this day, I find partly chewed hay in Harv's stall. He's not eating hay well, even soft hay. Am trying hay pellets from Tractor Supply and when our hay guy comes he'll bring chopped hay to try.

Happy Thanksgiving, all, and I hope your day is lovely and safe and peaceful.

  1. You do make a colourful bunch! I hope either the hay cubes or the chopped hay works; poor boy.

  4. Quite the color scheme! I missed the "sheet window of opportunity" and my Boys are all muddy messes. One hopes they are happy that way. *G*

I too appreciate a peaceful, cooperative herd.

  6. Happy Thanksgiving!
Try soaked hay cubes.... they worked wonders for a 40 year old pony I knew who had lost most of his teeth, but not his zest for life!

  7. Let's hear it for lovely, uneventful days. And may I say that all three of you really rock the colorful duds? Happy Thanksgiving.

  8. Hi, you have probably already thought of it but have you had his teeth checked by an equine dentist? Having them properly floated can make a huge difference to how well they can eat.

  9. I have a 34 yr. old QH who only has half his teeth left. He eats forage cubes and Purina Eq. Sr. (he tries hay but quids it all) The cubes are mostly timothy, not alfalfa, and soak apart in 5 min. in hot water. I pour this into a rubber pan with Sr. on top. He is thriving. I use him several days a week to pony my OTTB on trails and his canter is still a joy to ride. Retirement is a thing in our minds, not theirs!

  10. One of my maxims for horses is, Routine is everything. Horses love it, we love it. Such a nice peaceful moment. Ri's neck looks so lovely! He's turning into an athletic hunk.

  11. Beet pulp and hay cubes soaked together. High fiber and the beet pulp is kind of an "in between" concentrate that acts partly like forage and partly like grain ration.

HOW you do the hot coffee and two horses thing I will never know...
