Nattering nabobs: Eh. Let'em talk

Nattering nabobs of negativism -- what a delightful phrase, described by one writer as a " triumphant linguistic confection." It's one of my favorite quotes -- how I love using the phrase as a title to this post.

What nabobs? Where?
I occasionally check to see where hits on my blog are coming from. I saw that a lot of folks were being referred to my blog from the Fugly Horse of the Day bulletin board. The FHOTD blog, and the board, have a certain reputation  -- so being mentioned there is not always a good thing. I followed the link to see how BTB was mentioned. At first I was relieved to find a thread with the original post asking "what are the good blogs?" But then I scrolled down, and saw this...

Oh well. On the plus side, my site hits are up about 15%.  No such thing as bad publicity, as they say :-).

  3. Glad your site hits are up but yes, ignore the snarkiness from others as it is often just a one-upsmanship game amongs some. The reason I read your blog has as much to do with your "blabber" as it has to do with the videos your post! I'm always trying to educate my beginner re-rider self and am interested too how real people mingle their love for horses with real horse experience. That is what your blog provides - I don't care what other's opinions are as I have my OWN agenda, lol! Thank you for your blogs - I read them frequently.

  4. Well, according to a recent COTH thread, I have no business so much as throwing a leg over a horse. I feel your pain. My blog hits went up. Then I locked the blog because people felt the need to contact my clients and tell them how incompetent I am as a rider/trainer/person in general. Thankfully my clients have seen the results themselves and ignored the critique, but still. The internet can be a cruel place. I'm sorry people were jerks to you. I, for one, enjoy your 'blabber'.

  6. I also love the personal stuff! Just for the record :)

  7. Nonsense. While you do post all kinds of interesting educational stuff that's not your own personal insight, this is YOUR blog, and you started it to tell about you and your own horses. You are under no obligation to leave out personal stuff, because that's why you started posting in the first place.

We who read regularly are always here to cheer you on in your own quest to make Riley into the horse of your dreams. Personal "blabber" is the best part of the blog. And anyone with any insight into training a horse will know that it's each of our own personal experiences that serve as the best learning tool for others. Each horse, each rider, each day is its own "teachable moment" and we do well to listen to and respect each others trials and tribulations.

'Nough said. I could go on forever about the narrowminded who do not respect other horse owners taking the journey to knowledge on their own paths.

  8. I LOVE reading about the stuff you're doing with your horses - ignore the nay-sayers!

  9. If all I wanted to procrastinate work with was a constant stream of horse videos, I'd just troll youtube endlessly. The so called "blabber" is the context that makes your blog worth returning to and a joy to read.

  10. I think you provide a great mix of general horse talk, dressage information, videos AND the so-called "personal blabber" which most of us loyal readers not only don't mind, but appreciate! I truly enjoy reading about Riley and Harv and your cats and your awards and barn drama and anything else that comes up...

Bottom line is, this is YOUR blog and you can put what you want on it. Considering you have four times the page views in a month than I've had in the existence of my blog, obviously you're doing something right! :-)

By the way, unless I'm missing something, that bulletin board is not affiliated with the Fugly Blog. It's called "Free Speech Horse Forum." I've never seen it before and I'm a very long-time FHOTD reader, so I'm just wondering...

  11. To be honest, if you want to follow a blog with a lot of blabber, some of it entertaining, some of it snarky but to the point, Fugly is that blog. That said, EVERYONE has a scroll button on their computer keyboard (or mouse) and no one is forced to read anything. Speaking for myself (and echoing every comment above), I LOVE your blog. It's entertaining, I'm learning a lot, nodding my head most of the time because you and I think alike AND we see the same faults in our own riding. And some of the videos you find and post are GREAT. I am in love with a couple of warmbloods (though I am an OTTBer through and through) because I met them through your blog posts and videos. Keep up the good work and let the nabobs natter. ;o)

  12. I love this blog! I read every post, which is not true of plenty of blogs out there. Keep it up!

  13. I follow this blog, BECAUSE of the personal blabber. I can read dressage theory anywhere, but hearing a dressage amateur, like myself, share her struggles and triumphs in this crazy sport is what makes this blog so enjoyable.

  14. I usually stop following blogs with too much personal blabber. I don't want to know if people are sick or if their cat died - that happens to all of us, the world doesn't need to know. Stay on topic!
But a single comment like that, even on Fugly doesn't mean much.
I agree with TBDancer's comments about the scroll function and the Fugly blog. Oh, and I'm also a dedicated TB person. :-)

  15. If it weren't for Columbus's personal feelings and fortitude, America would not have been discovered. Blabber ON!

  16. I say pfffbbttt! to the naysayers. I read most blogs for the personal blabber. I find the super specific topic ones to be too one dimensional.

  17. I have enjoyed your blog for a while now but don't usually comment much. Just wanted to tell you I really enjoy your blog and that you should ignore the NNN. Some people have an inflated opinion of their importance. :)

  18. I love the personal stuff too! It makes your blog such a pleasure and the one site on my daily reading list I never miss!!!
