Splain this to me!

I understand about equestrian-inspired boots being "all the rage" -- especially the spanish top over the knee boots. But here are half-chap insired "Slimpack riding boots," from Athleta, Zappos, Sorel (the manufacturer), and other fine stores -- for $210. I think the strap under the bottom of the shoe is a faux-fashion strap -- not functional.

  1. Ugh. One of the points of riding boots is to protect the leg from stirrup leather rubs. Good riding boots fit the calf, as to good half chaps. These don't even resemble real half chaps. For that price you could buy a pair of paddock boots or simply shoes and add a pair of nice leather half chaps on your own. Save a bundle and actually look good instead of clunky.

  2. This make me feel better about myself when I tromp through the grocery store while still wearing halfchaps and paddock boots. Who knew they were fashionable!

  3. Saw a photo of a local trainer doing the jog at some competition in Wellington recently on Facebook. She had previously posted a pic of her with horse (GP level) with a blue ribbon. Her sponsor pointed out in the comments section that the ribbon had a light blue rosette and was 10th place. Anyway, photo of trainer jogging the horse: She's in skinny jeans with holes in the knees. Probably designer price, knowing her. She is always "the center of attention" and those of us that have known her since she was a teenager wonder how much longer she will retain her sponsor(s). I also thought the point of the jog was for the HORSE and not for the handler.

Seems to me you're right on the money about "equestrian-inspired" with no clue as to "form and function." I agree with Jean. Some of the "fashion" articles in Dressage Today miss the mark as well, in my opinion.

  4. I am not certain, but I don't think these are "equestrian" inspired fashion. The folk I know who wear these things call them "snake boots" and use them in hunting. The strap under the instep is to hold them down, so they won't ride up when walking through heavy brush. Depending on where you are hunting you may want a different type of boot, so having a removable gater can be cost effective. A good set of Sorel hunting boots can set you back $300.00

  6. actually the athleta ad does call them riding boots but I hadn't thought of your interpretation of this fashion.
