Show jumping derbies: Over the edge of a cliff

Jumping derbies combine elements of eventing (solid obstacles, water, banks) and show jumping (big stix, shallow cups), and a lot more jumps than a typical show jumping course. Exciting stuff -- would love to see this in person...

  1. We always go and watch the derby at Spruce Meadows every year - a very exciting course and very demanding of horse and rider teams.
Spruce has the biggest bank in the world (at least the last time I checked) and lots of other challenging obstacles - although it seemed no trouble at all for Beezie and Judgement in '09, even on such a rainy day!

  2. I wish! I'm too much of a chicken to actually go out and do a whole course. It's way too cool though!

  3. Wow! That steep downhill bank to the vertical was amazing! Such extraordinary boldness while still being so careful, and the rider did such a good job of setting the horse up for each jump.

  4. Kind of like cross country in an arena. I've seen these derbies before and think they are a super test of horse and rider. This one had an amazing array of different jumping challenges.

  5. What a lovely horse and how BRAVE! Lots of confidence in his rider, for sure. Loved it.
