Musical freestyle: Ready, set, NO NO NO NO!

I read once where Olympic dressage horse Flim Flam sometimes balked at going into the ring -- this upset his rider Sue Blinks, who wanted her horse to enjoy his work (article in Practical Horseman from years ago). This horse is also showing some, reluctance, shall we say? They sort of missed their musical freestyle, but some of his moves were dancelike.

Riley sometimes balks going into the indoor ring (where he is lunged). Is this I have to look forward to???? Thanks to the rider for sharing this rather tense moment.

  1. Oh geez poor gal. I'm not sure what she could have done differently. The horse was just NOT having it that day.

  2. That was amazing! I love the dance moves and they were more appropriate to the music than anything more dressagey might have been in a way. I wonder what set him off. Sudden aversion to Chuck Berry?

  3. Horse is cute. Rider has a great attitude & can laugh it off. The music was fun (too bad the freestyle didn't work out). And yeah those kind of do look like boogie steps. :-)

  4. These are the moments our horses teach us the meaning of "humility."

Wonder what was bothering the poor guy? He was certainly making it clear he wanted no part of that ride.

  6. That horse must go clubbing with mine. He likes to "dance" too. :)

  7. My TB always refuses to go into the indoor arena at first (where he's lunged & we do our groundwork). I don't know that it's an indication that he hates his work, so much as a typical display of him sharing his opinion. He's completely convinced that his opinion on EVERYTHING is of utmost important to me, so he's just letting me know that he'd prefer not to work and would rather lounge about and be groomed for hours. I tell him that I would prefer to lie about and eat bonbons myself, but it's not in the cards. Quite frankly, his lifestyle shares more similarities with that ideal than mine does, so I'm not very sympathetic.
