Centerline project designs: My least favorite

Of all of the design ideas presented on the Centerline Project, the idea for a hot weather sleeveless alternative to dressage jackets is the one I would welcome most. Unfortunately this jacket (which isn't unattractive) looks a little too close to what Errol Flynn wore in Robin Hood  -- the shoulders and skirt have  medieveal design elements, don't you think?

While I do like the lower/dropped waist, it's not a flattering look for many women. I'm a big fan of the empire waist myself. I'd like to see the show world adopt something close to the look shown below, from equetech.com. I don't quite see it with sort sleeves, though. For now, I'll stick with my Kerrits vest.

  1. I think your vest looked nicer with short sleeves than either of those!

I do tend to like double breasted for riding vest - somehow it looks more flattering than typically double breasted items look on me. I just think the vest you showed is a bit too structured and formal looking for short sleeves.

  2. I can just see the "petals" of the bottom hem flapping.

  3. I think getting rid of the 2 rows of buttons would help tremendously with the vest! Bit I think just a plain black, tightly fitted, zip up vest, should do the trick for showing!

  4. I almost liked the bodysuit idea: DEFINITELY not because it was a bodysuit with a matching coat (shall we make dressage look even more of a circus-like spectacle than non-horsey people already think it is? lol) but it at least modernized the outfit and looked sporty. It would be nice to see an outfit that paid its dues to the classic equestrian style but still looked like we were participating in an Olympic sport haha. That will be a a really tough balance!

  5. Ooh, I do like the vest you've pictured. And your Kerrits vest looked really nice.

The sketched design needs a little less in the shoulder, I think, but I do kind of like the general shaping.

  6. Yes.... the waist on that first vest... while beautiful in its own way.... would end up poofing out around the tops of breeches as soon as someone was in the saddle. Not exactly lending for a "polished" silhouette. But I personally don't care much for the second vest either. I'd much rather go for a "sporty" black vest (like your Kerrits vest)... because they are attractive, flattering, and presentable.... both in and out of the arena!

  7. I actually like the styling on the concept vest, but then, I have a very long torso and almost any top I buy that has a waistline set in is about 2 inches above where my waist actually is. Depending on how the peplams (the little scalloped things at the bottom of the vest) are done, they could be very distracting if they flutter too much.

It WOULD be nice to see a bit more in terms of options when you don't have to wear a jacket. One lady I know shows in an attractive, lightweight sweater vest with a long-sleeved shirt and stock tie. She looks very tidy and formal with the tie, and she always chooses a vest that compliments her mount.
