Sunny Boy X DeNiro = Desiderata

I've never seen a Sunny Boy offspring I didn't totally covet, and the combination of Sunny Boy in DeNiro has resulted in this very lovely 4-year-old. I'm not sure how experienced the rider is (hands seem a tidge unsteady on this very big mover). It's hard for me to judge, the German riders don't seem to value "stillness" as a riding quality, they just want to go with the movement. At any rate the horse is doing well.

I love his head carriage and elastic/natural quality of his movement...

  1. Hi Stacey. I always enjoy your blog. Just a heads up that the particular stud farm which posted this video seems to be in Denmark, not Germany. Also, even with the caveat that it's hard for you to judge, you're using a very broad brush to conclude that "the German riders don't seem to value "stillness" as a riding quality" from one clip. You can conclude that particular rider doesn't, or isn't a good rider. I personally thought her hands were all over the place, legs were out in front of her and her head bobbed something awful. Just thought I'd let you know what's on my mind. I mean no offense.

  2. That rider has a nice, flexible seat to be able to sit that well on such a springy trot. That horse is a really athletic mover.

  3. Hi Dea, I knew the horse was Danish, I didn't know the origin of the video. I was not trying to get a "dig" into the Germans :-), my trainer has often told me that it's a misconception that good riding is still or motionless riding. Maybe I was thinking Europe in general, and maybe it's just that on the whole their horses tend to have the bigger movement (okay, now I'm bashing US-bred horses!). I was writing pretty casually when I wrote that. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify a bit (or backtrack).

  5. I'm not sure that is a good rider/horse combination but maybe it's a bad day and they are just out of synch with each other.

Have you ever looked at some of the Rodioso babies? While Rodioso was born and bred in Germany, he's being bred here in America. I've really loved his foals in previous years but he's got one due out of Bella next month. Bella's out of DeNiro so between her and Rodioso, there's a lot of great breeding. I've loved the personality and movement Rodioso gives his foals so I'm really excited to see what happens with Bella.

  6. Very nice horse and what a saint! My horse will NOT take that kind of bouncing, she will shoot out from under you like a rocket the second you bounce rudely.

  7. I disagree with Jean. The rider's bobbing head denotes that she is not sitting the trot well, not absorbing the movement, so that her tension is coming out through her spine - hence the head bob. The horse, which is super, seems to be searching for the contact so I'm guessing the rider isn't too experienced but hey - we've all got to ride to improve :)

By the way, I couldn't use any of the designations to post this under my usual name (OTTTBUK) as I would before with no URL and it wouldn't verify my credentials on OpenID (whatever that means) so I had to go with Anonymous - any suggestions for future posts?

  8. Hi, Blogger has just made this change -- I can revert back to the popup comments, which may work better to capture ID etc, but then you lose the "subscribe by email" link and you won't get updates.

I'll check the blogger help page but last I looked, those were our choices.
    Sorry! I lodged my complaint.

  9. Wow, that is ONE BIG-MOVING horse, alright! I could not even imagine what it would be like to try and sit that trot, so I am cutting the poor rider some slack. I probably would be bounced right outta the saddle immediately. :-)

I was surprised (and pleased) to see a grey. It might be my imagination, but doesn't seem like too many dressage WBs are grey.

  10. At least your blog still has the "sign in" link in the corner! I tried to comment on another blog yesterday which didn't have anonymous as an option and also wouldn't allow me to choose to log in anywhere. Dumb "improvement" format changes!
