What is it about seeing the barn in my rear view mirror?

It's 9pm, time to head home from the barn. I throw my gear in the back and start the engine. Heading down the drive, I glance in the rear view mirror. This little habit seems to be my cue to wonder, "Did I latch Riley's (or Harvey's) door?" Dammit -- I don't know if I did.

I drive a bit further, reasoning that I probably did. At the end of the driveway (it's a long driveway), I decide that probably isn't good enough. I back up the drive to go check, knowing it's a fool's errand. While I sometimes leave my house with the curling iron plugged in, my success rate in shutting and latching stall doors is 100%. I have never found a door unlatched.

Sigh. This is what comes from being OCD and ADD....

  1. LOL- been there, done that, more than once! And I know several other horse moms who do the exact same thing! Don't worry- you're not alone!

  2. Hey, my barn's in the back yard and I obsess that way too....but then again, I have left things unlatched in the past, so obsession is warranted. *G*

  3. Boy, I know what you mean! I often wonder if I have a bit of ADD and OCD (I don't mean to offend anyone who has been diagnosed), but these maladies got their letters long after I was young enough to get the diagnosis. To be fair, I probably am NOT--I don't even have a reason at all for being the way I am. Doesn't "perfectionist" "great attention to detail", or "focused (to the point of imagining that I did or didn't do something I was or wasn't supposed to do)" sound better? LOL

  4. I do that with the whether I turned off the water after filling my horse's water bucket when I feed him his hay. I have visions of him standing in a pool of water, because it has happened in the past.

  5. I do that at least 1 out of every 4 barn days! I'm glad it isn't just me. I've even gotten within 5 minutes of my house and turned around to "check" something.

  6. Daisy's "mom" here:
I know just how you feel! I do that with the garage door and the curling iron. It's not that I really think I forgot, it's just that I think "what if...." and have to make doubly sure. I think the problem is, it's so routine you can't recall closing the door or unplugging the curling iron. Sometimes I think to myself "it is Monday and I am shutting the door" and then I can usually recall doing it.

  7. I am so glad I'm not the only one who does that!!! I don't feel so "mental" now. =)

  8. Ohhh, yes.....my obsession also extends to checking saddle girths, water buckets, gate latches, tack room door latches....I could go on. What is it about horses that brings it out in us?!
